Rebecca Mutz: The Waterfront

School 33 Art Center presents “The Waterfront,” a solo installation from Rebecca Mutz.  The exhibition, featuring reconstructed charcoal, graphite and ink drawings, is on display from Friday, November 14 through Saturday, January 3, 2015 in the Project Space.  An opening reception takes place Friday, November 14, 2014 from 6pm to 9pm.

Our innate desire for connection affects the type of environments we are drawn to.  Mutz tends to get preoccupied with specific spaces because of their familiarity and the memories they hold.  She observes that light has a potent impact on how we remember a specific space and how we relate to new spaces we encounter.  Memories are recollected differently each time, sometimes forming almost concretely before becoming slightly abstracted as they move in and out of our lucidity.
Mutz’s work disturbs and fragments the space she captures by rendering particular areas more completely, while simultaneously repeating other elements.  Her drawings on paper originate in a favorite spot at the bar where she works, and once back in her studio she rips the paper and begins reconstruction.
